I managed to have both my babies in the month of March so it is rather a busy – and expensive – month. Plus there are lots of other parties at the same time because our NCT group friends, nursery friends AND school friends all seem to have spring babies. Party time!
But for poor old parents, birthday parties can be a real headache. It is not like with a house party, where you have a larger ratio of adults to children. It consists of pass the parcel pressure (“has she had a turn yet?”), 20 fancy dress outfits, sugar rushes, tears, tantrums, bouncy castle punch-ups and never sitting down. All at a very high volume.
I posted an old blog last week telling you about how we manage parties with children with coeliac disease. Usually we take a little pack up and they feel special because we go to several shops to try to match usual party foods (cocktail sausages from M&S, Tesco for pretend Skips, Sainsbury’s).
At three different parties, Megan (my mini-coeliac, who is turning five tomorrow), parents made a separate box of food and treats prior to anyone else’s food to avoid cross-contamination. They matched pretty much what the other kids ate and Megan felt special and included. It was so lovely and so appreciated. It felt weird letting her go out the door without taking food and drink with her.

One of the parents is gluten free herself, which made it a little easier, but the other parents weren’t. Bless them. I always offer to bring all of the girls’ food as it is so expensive and quite a faff if you aren’t used to it.
Amalie was two a few weeks ago, so we just had a little family party. I made the entire party buffet gluten free so I did not have to worry. The only thing I had to fret about was the gf sausages – the grown ups had eaten all but four of them before the kids even sat down. There were 36 to start with! It was OK, though, as there were still Pom Bears, the old classic cheese and pineapple sticks, egg mayo sandwiches (on gf bread), fruit, vegetable sticks, houmous, olives (my two have a weird obsession with olives) and gf biscuits. I think the food was definitely better than my poor attempt at the party games. Not surprising as I’d stayed up until 2.30am that day drinking (I blame pressure from my brother-in-law).
Last week was Megan’s 5th party. There were 40 kids there (I know… never again!!!). There were too many for it to be completely gluten free as it would have cost way too much. So we matched the sandwiches, got gf cocktail sausages and some cool free-from biscuits and Megan was happy. Obviously the pirate cake was gluten and dairy free too so I could have a massive slice of that. Megan absolutely loved it. I think I was in shock for several hours afterwards. Thank goodness I’ve got a year to recover.
