Has anyone else got a toddler or little one with coeliac disease? My daughter was diagnosed at just over 2. I knew deep down really that she had it from as soon as we started weaning – but was hoping I was just an over-sensitive mother. Unfortunately I was right and she was off the scale on all the blood tests. I was very relieved when they didn’t do an endoscopy.
Luckily as I have started this business – I gave all my advice to nursery and they have been great. I take in gluten-free alternatives – e.g. pizza bases, biscuits, sausages, gravy etc and they pretty much match what the other kiddies eat.
I feel like I am in the coeliac police though when we are out anywhere – I ended up cleaning up at someone else’s party as there were cake crumbs absolutely everywhere following cake decorating. My mini coeliac gets her hands washed constantly, and when we were camping I was diving on people to stop them giving her contaminated foods. How have others found it? Have I just got to accept that when she doesn’t understand fully – she will get contaminated? I am currently trying to think – she is much better than she was before and we have caught it very young indeed. I am worried about school – has anyone else got their kids in school?
I can’t believe how well she has done with it though. She just adapted immediately and now says, “I can’t have that – I need special food for my tummy.” Amazing. She has never really got properly upset either. Just shows how much she must have been struggling. How have other mini coeliacs adapted?
