Support our campaign to help authorities tackle allergy bullying

Please sign our petition: Help police & schools tackle allergy bullying through education & producing guidelines

If someone threatened you with a knife or gun, you would have every right to report it to the police.

Weapons kill. And so can meringues.

It might sound daft, comparing guns to cakes. But to people with severe allergies, food can be a killer.

And that is why Safer Eating is launching a petition, Help authorities tackle allergy bullying: Increase education and guidelines. Please sign it now.

The recent Peter Rabbit film brought the issue of allergy bullying to national attention. Ricky Gervais, in his new Netflix show Humanity, also mocks nut allergy sufferers. But this is not a joke.

Police are currently investigating the tragic death of 13-year-old Karanbir Cheema, who died in west London in 2017. He was reported to have died after coming into contact with an allergen – possibly from having cheese flicked in his face. A 13-year-old boy has been arrested and released on bail.

Should it really take for someone to die before the police treat allergy bullying as a crime and schools are equipped to deal with the problem?

One of the main issues we face with allergy bullying today is that we don’t know its scale because there is no system in place to record incidents. At Safer Eating we’ve heard countless examples from parents who’ve reported allergy bullying to the police, only to be told it is a matter for the school to deal with. However, if a child was threatened with a knife, then of course police would have to act. We are also concerned that schools do not have sufficient education and guidelines in place to deal with allergy bullying.

Let’s try to look at how big this issue is through the limited information we do have. In a recent parliamentary debate, Jo Swinson (Liberal Democrat MP East Dunbartonshire), stated that around 2% of children have a nut allergy. According to the ONS there are more than 11 million children under 18 in the UK. This would mean there are around 220,000 children in the UK with nut allergies. You can dissect this further with this US survey “Child and parental reports of bullying in a consecutive sample of children with food allergy”, which revealed that around 40% of children and parents have experienced allergy bullying. This equates to 88,000 children in the UK with nut allergies who have been victims of allergy bullying. It is a shockingly high figure and one that should highlight the need for the Government to take this seriously and act now.

No more should we be reading tweets from devastated parents, like our brave friend Diary Of A Nutty Mum:

The aim of this petition is threefold:

1) Help to spread awareness of the scale of allergy bullying, therefore offering support to victims and families

2) Help the Government and police in the UK record incidents of allergy bullying so we can understand the true scale of the problem

3) Ensure that the police and schools have the necessary power to deal with allergy bullying in the appropriate manner

During our campaign, we will be encouraging people from across the UK free-from community to sign the petition and we do hope that you’ll get involved. We will also be sharing our stories, such as the heartbreaking times when Safer Eating blogger, Rory Mason, experienced allergy bullying. We want to hear your stories too, so our voice is louder still.

The allergy community is made up of a strong group of amazing people and we are hoping they back our campaign to make the world a safer and more understanding place for allergy sufferers. Together, we can help improve the lives of the tens of thousands of children who have been victimised and taunted over their allergies.

Please sign our petition NOW to help them.
