Well, I’ve had a puzzling start to 2017, health-wise.
Following on from last year’s post-Christmas blog (Not your average Christmas bloat), this year has been better… in terms of my stomach. I’ve been continuously bloated but I’ve had no other major problems. No more than usual, anyway.
Instead, I have been having strange skin issues and allergy symptoms. I often get random hives (see the photo below), but they come, itch a bit, then usually go within a day. So apart from looking like a crazy lady grimacing, growling and scratching – I just cope with them. This time, they have been different.
In July, I had hives and a rash all over my body, which lasted for about four days. It is frightening, but I’ve had them before and they calmed down after a shower. My husband looked at me and then attempted to pretend that there was nothing to worry about whilst looking like he’d seen Blackburn Rovers being eaten by a shark. I think the hives, on this occasion, were due to a certain grass or pollen as we were camping at the time.
But I have had some ridiculously itchy patches over the last few weeks. They drive you insane and come up like little pin pricks vs nettle stings. Water seems to aggravate them and they are worse at night. They take about five to six days to go. I got one of those this week and have no idea what it is a response to.

I saw the dermatologist a few weeks ago, who thinks I have psoriasis, eczema and chronic urticaria or potentially dermographia (also known as dermatographia). I’ve read up about dermographia and I think that is what it is – my daughters (who are also coeliac, like me) seem to have it too. It basically means the usual hives I get can be caused by scratching and that the wheals remain there for longer than on a normal person. It is also known as ‘skin writing’.
At the same time as the latest bout of hives, I also got a red, swollen under eye and eyelid. My eyes have been bothering me for months due to what I think is an unknown allergy but it is not usually the outside, too.
Dermatology advised a referral to immunology, so I guess the process continues. I am struggling to narrow down any likely food or non-food allergens as culprits.
Maybe 2017 will be a year of further discovery about the strange effect things can have on my body… inside and out.

Follow up note:
I just wanted to add an extra note to this blog as I have recently found out that the guesses at my diagnosis from the skin clinic were very woolly. I have spoken to both people who suffer with skin problems and a few more doctors (including my daughter’s consultant dermatologist). I have been told that it is very uncommon to have eczema and psoriasis together and that the medication I was given just treats everything. After more discussion with a doctor today – it is very likely to be psoriasis because of the places I get it. I just wanted to make sure people were aware of this as I certainly wasn’t.
