So festival season is well and truly over – but we went to some brilliant ones this year. The last one was OnRoundhay, which was an amazing new little festival in Leeds. It is meant to be returning next year so try to come if you can. It is well worth a visit – great bands and it’s really family friendly, with loads of stuff for kids.
It was in Roundhay Park, and said in the promo info that you were not allowed to take cool bags and could only bring in a little food. After failing to contact them as the email address on the website was incorrect and kept bouncing back, I went armed with evidence (hospital letters, Coeliac UK membership) that myself and my two girls have dietary requirements. They were absolutely fine about it so that was the first hurdle crossed with no probs.
Now, I am both gluten and dairy free (I have a severe lactose intolerance). But, I had a wander around and actually found two options for food, which was incredible. Chicken kebab with no pitta and also lamb, sweet potato and butternut squash. I also spotted a stall that made balls of rice with different fillings, but unfortunately although they often do provide gluten-free options, they couldn’t on this occasion. Like I said, we had our own food, but some mini sausages and dry gf sandwiches don’t really cut it when you can see and smell everyone else’s meals.

I was very excited about the lamb so I went to speak to the chef – just to check for sure. He said the lamb and veg was safe, but I would obviously have to skip the ciabatta. Great, I thought, so I then waited for 30 minutes with the sun on my face and standing close to the fire cooking the lamb. When I finally got near enough to see what was happening at the counter, I realised there was still a 30 minute wait for the lamb. They offered steak, but I could see they were basting it in something. Turns out it was butter. They said they would leave the butter if I wanted it but I could see it coating the grill. So I left the queue with a burning cheek and a miserable face. I had to save my husband from the sole duty of minding our crazy mini-coeliacs, “festival wagon” piled high with our stuff and pram.
I was not defeated, however, and my husband bought me a chicken kebab while getting his food. And after my biggest mini-coeliac polished off most of that, when both the kids were safely asleep, I found another fantastic place that had “gluten free” clearly labelled. Joy! So I had curry, rice and salad and it was delicious. (will insert name). Very impressed.
Now for me, it’s back to pining for the festival season to start again. Think my kids have got the bug, too.
