I headed over to Liverpool the weekend before last for the Allergy and Free From Show North. I was really excited to see who was there and what new goodies I could find, and it didn’t disappoint. There were the usual big players with amazing stands…
Good ol’ Genius were showing off their wealth of goodies including their pancakes, crumpets and seeded brown farmhouse loaf. Rice Dream (my saviours) had tasters of all their dairy-free milk, and from chatting to them I found out they do an Almond Dream Salted Caramel ice-cream. Now I need to be finding that.
There were also other legends in the gluten-free world such as BFree with their new sweet potato wraps, Isabel’s with her fab gluten-free Yorkshire mix, dough balls, batter and gravy granules. Schar were offering lunchtime paninis and Nestle gave out free boxes of their fantastic gluten-free cocoa rice. And my faves Koko have launched yoghurts too which is very exciting.
Warburton’s Newburn Bakehouse were showing off their new crumpets (the best I have found so far). I bought one of the new seeded sourdough artisan boules. I love the rest of the range (wraps – fab, baguettes – amazing, white sourdough artisan cob – my favourite), but unfortunately this one fell to bits a little so it was very difficult to make sandwiches.
Not sure about you, but as soon as I was diagnosed with coeliac and found out most sausages had wheat flour in – I kept getting cravings for them. Luckily, Heck and debbie & andrew’s were there with their fantastic, tasty sausages. I now wish I’d always bought gluten-free sausages – they are sooo much better! debbie & andrew’s describes it as being a sausaholic.
I met the guys from Adam’s raw chocolate from Bristol and he gave us a freebie to try. They have found an amazing alternative, natural sweetener from Peru called yacon. They look and taste great and the stand looked really cool too. I managed to stock up on some Venice Bakery gluten free pizzas. I had some on Friday – one base as a gluten and dairy-free pizza (with Violife dairy-free cheese, my new favourite) and one as garlic bread (using Flora dairy-free spread). They are so good. The flavours are amazing – they really are a gigantic step above everyone else (and also above my own homemade ones).

Yorica had an amazing van selling free-from ice creams. All are gluten and dairy free – and they looked unbelievable. They also had free-from cones and toppings (including sprinkles). I wish I’d had my mini-coeliacs with me to try them. Unfortunately I couldn’t try them myself due to their fructose content.
It was great to chat to Cressida from FreeFrom Foods Matter who run the FreeFrom Food Awards. To all our amazing restaurants, cafes and pubs – make sure you enter the FreeFrom Eating Out Awards by logging into the FreeFrom Eating Out Awards website or calling 02077222866.
There were biscuits galore at Lovemore. Jammy wheels, gingerbread men and custard creams WITHOUT MILK! Woo hoooo! It is so hard to find gluten, dairy and oat-free biscuits – it’s nice for us all to be able to eat the same thing for a change.
And as far as dairy-free chocolate goes, I think I have found one of the best – Cocoa Libra. I chatted to the founder, Louise who has done an amazing job. The products look and taste fabulous. You can tell she has a graphic design background and it is a lovely story of developing the business due to her son becoming intolerant to dairy. With both my kids being strictly gluten-free – it is definitely a big driving force for me too.
Our heroes, Doves Farm were also dishing out lots and lots of advice in talks and demonstrations . We don’t need to be swayed in their direction, I don’t actually use any other gluten-free plain or self raising flours. They are farmers by trade (the clue is in the name) and due to there being a coeliac in the family – they set up Doves Farm and have gone from strength to strength. I just love it.
It was really inspiring seeing the free-from world in action. There are so many new and wonderful things and it just keeps getting better and better. It makes me really happy and proud that we are doing what we are doing and trying to improve things for tricky eaters.
