First impressions of a tricky eater

phone-april-2016-1170

So I was wondering, what do people actually think of me when I tell them I have coeliac disease and lactose intolerance? Before I was diagnosed, I remember sometimes thinking these things were in people’s heads and I would never ever be a tricky eater. How wrong I was. I am one of the worst. None of it by choice.

I don’t often mention to people that I also have to follow a low FODMAP diet. I have to avoid fructose (mango, apple, honey and fructose corn syrup are the biggies) but I also try to have only small amounts of onion and avoid things like cauliflower and avocado. If I go into it, I imagine it would blow people’s minds. Why the hell would you react to fruit and veg? It’s crazy. But believe me, I need to.

I hope I explain it all clearly enough so they understand how serious it is. The fact is, I have coeliac disease with unrelated lactose intolerance – and probably IBS, hence why the low FODMAP diet works. And I hope I also don’t bore people to death with excess info.

Some people seem genuinely interested and want to know more. Generally, people get food intolerances, allergies and coeliac disease very mixed up. A lot of folk can’t believe it when you tell them about cross-contamination. I reckon they think people with coeliac disease or severe allergies are being over the top when they won’t use the same toaster (without toaster bags) or can’t have chips that have been cooked in the same oil as battered fish.

It’s true though – we have to be very careful. I have had severe stomach cramps after staying at other people’s houses when a lot of gluten has been eaten, even though I was trying my best to be careful and had prepared all our meals. My mini-coeliac was the same – that’s how I figured it must have been down to cross-contamination.

I definitely like to make it clear to restaurants that I have coeliac disease so they take me seriously and really try their best to avoid cross-contamination.

The worst response I’ve had when talking about my diet was one morning after a wedding (I was nursing a hangover so not the best time to challenge me). A man at my table said: “That’s just ridiculous, coeliac disease never used to exist. They’ve proven that you can just eat gluten now and that it is in people’s heads.”

After saying my piece – trying to get the point across that my kids also have it and it is proven by blood tests and damage to your bowel… so how is it just in my head?! – I had to get up and leave the table. I could tell I was getting nowhere with him.

But, overall, I think awareness and understanding is increasing. More people and businesses are getting clued up – and that is what Safer Eating is supporting all the way.
