My top 10 gluten-free ‘bready’ things…

For Coeliac Awareness Week 2018 I thought I’d let you know about some of my favourite gluten-free finds and I’m kicking it off with gluten-free bread. I can’t say I never come across it, but the dry cardboardy gluten-free bread is starting to be more of a rarity and there are some truly fabulous products on the market now. Here’s my top 10…

1. BFree pitta breads

These pitta breads are brilliant. When toasted, they are just like the real thing and form a proper pocket so you can actually fill them (without it all falling out everywhere). Top marks BFree.

2. Venice Bakery seasoned pizza bases

Venice Bakery’s pizza bases are definitely the tastiest I have found. I tried them at the Allergy and Free From Show a few years ago and now have to treat myself (and my mini-coeliacs) to a postal order now and again. They remind me of the pizzas I used to eat at really good Italian restaurants before I knew I had coeliac disease.

3. Schär sweet brioche rolls

Me and the kids have totally fallen in love with these brioches. They are soft, sweet and perfect with a bit of Vitalite and posh jam. Great for taking away for a quick and easy breakfast.

4.Tesco free from sandwich thins seeded

These are a staple in my bread bin nowadays. They are great for sandwiches to take to work and they are a bit cheaper than other gluten-free bread products. Good ol’ Tesco.

5. Warburtons gluten free artisan white sourdough cob

I think this is my favourite gluten-free bread loaf. It looks and smells great. You can slice it like normal bread and make a sandwich which is larger than the size of a matchbox. It costs about the same as other gluten-free breads, so it is pricey – but I don’t mind paying more as it is really good quality.

I hadn’t tried these rolls for ages until the other day. They are perfect now so I wonder if the recipe has changed – they are fresh and soft and great for a classic sandwich like a BLT. 7. Whole Creations gluten free garlic and coriander naan bread

It’s been quite a struggle to get gf naan breads recently. I’m so pleased we can still buy these. They are really tasty and a bit of a saviour when you have an Indian. We don’t need to miss out, just because we’re got coeliac disease. Are you up for making a peshwari one next Whole Creations?

These look great and are fab for melted sandwiches. If you’re dairy-free, Violife is the best cheese I’ve found so far. Again they’re a decent size, so you actually feel like you’ve eaten something. Ooohh the world of free-from is getting exciting.

9. Genius gluten free pancakes

Another perfect brekkie product. So easy to give the kids as a snack and great to take away. I often take these on holiday and to festivals as they are pretty flat to pack. I personally can’t tell any difference at all in taste or texture to the real thing.

10. Warburtons gluten free crumpets

I used to adore Warburtons normal crumpets so was so pleased when these came out. I think they are definitely the closest to the real thing I have had so far. They taste great with a big dollop of Vitalite. They are also not as pricey as other products which is really good.
