When birthdays go wrongs

It seems to be party season for my mini-coeliac daughter, Megan. She’s getting one or two party invites a week.

Last week it was a party at a play centre for a little boy. I usually tell the party-holder’s parents that I will cater for my little one and for them not to worry. It makes it easier for them and my mind is at rest as I know I don’t have to stress about cross-contamination.

Megan, who is three, is more than happy to rock up with her gluten-free party food in her special packed-lunch cool bag. I try to match what they are providing at the party so she won’t feel left out – you know, shove in a biscuit, cake, cocktail sausage, cheese and some crisps. I also have a secret stash of sweets and chocolate to pull out in case she wins some gluten-infested sweets or chocolate in a game or for when I have to take away half the party bag contents at the end of the party. She is already heartbroken enough when we have to go as she cannot understand why a party should come to an end (just like her mum!).

I left the special packed-lunch cool bag on the kitchen table. We were rushing about and feeling very dishevelled and even turned up with an IOU for the present. Terrible.

Megan was pretty devastated and cried when I told her. The venue usually serves some gluten-free items so I trotted up to the counter in the hope they could save me. But, unfortunately, they did not have anything. Deary me. They offered to nip out to Sainsbury’s, bless them, but we muddled through with a few fruit snacks and dived on the trusty Pom Bears when they came out so we could get some uncontaminated crisps. She was fine by this point… until all the iced biscuits appeared. Cue more tears and me feeling like the worst mother ever.

For this week’s party, I was extremely prepared. I had planned the special party lunch in advance and ordered the items in the shopping. The presents were bought and the cards written. We turned up at David Lloyd’s for 3pm and didn’t recognise a soul. No wonder. We’d arrived a week early. We’d actually arrived on the RSVP date. So, again, Megan was in tears. Luckily, we got a free go on the soft play bit. Mummy has officially lost it!

A lot of people tell me I’m Super Woman or Super Mum but it’s times like these that make me question that!
