I’m just back from the Allergy and Free From Show North, where I met Nina Modak from Eat Allergy Safe. She had a great idea – she was asking kiddies there in Liverpool to write down their allergy “wins”.
I don’t have an allergy, but I do have coeliac disease and lactose intolerance and must follow a low FODMAP diet. So here are my 5 recent free-from wins…
Proper Chinese takeaway
As I was staying in St Helen’s ready to go to the show on Sunday, we had a Chinese takeaway from nearby Chung Ku in Rainhill. They have a full gluten-free menu and all the dishes I asked for were naturally dairy-free too. My mini coeliacs and I had Singapore fried rice, beef in black bean sauce and a cheeky side order of salt and pepper chicken wings. Well, it arrived and I nearly cried. It has been over four years since I had a proper Chinese. It was absolutely amazing. I told my family about ten times how excited I was. The next thing on my list is to make sure they register on our site.
Amazing dairy-free chocolate
I found the most amazing dairy-free chocolate at the Allergy Show from Cocoa Libre. It is absolutely divine. No weird taste, just gorgeous looking and tasting chocolate. I am so pleased it is stocked in Booths and Sainsbury’s now. Woo hoo! That’s me sorted for life.

My parents looked after our mini coeliacs, Megan and Amalie, for the first bit of half-term, which meant me and the husband had a very rare night to ourselves. We dragged ourselves off the sofa and went to Salvo’s in Leeds. I haven’t been since I was diagnosed and it was superb. They checked everything for me to make sure it was gluten and dairy free and I had a gorgeous starter of meats and olives followed by chicken that tasted so incredible I didn’t believe the sauce was actually free from. Tasty! Tasty! Unfortunately we were so tired we were still home by 9.30pm.
Germano’s chilli sauce
We discovered the fantastic Chilli Shop in Leeds recently – I’ve already tweeted about it. It’s an amazing little place. Frank Jay, the owner, told us all about how brilliant the Germano’s chilli sauce is (which is described as, ‘the best tasting thing in the Chilliverse’) and we were not disappointed. You only need a tiny bit of it but we’ve managed to get through half the jar in less than a month. It goes with everything and brings the flavours out and gives food a little fire. Beautiful stuff.
Safer catering
We had a Halloween party and I catered for all of it as gluten and dairy free. There was pulled pork, coleslaw, chilli con carne and rice on offer. Everyone was so impressed with what was on the table they didn’t even venture to the gluten shelf where the evil, evil, cheese top rolls were hiding. Everyone loved it, especially with a smidgen of the chilli sauce, above.
So there are my top 5 wins – we’d love to hear about yours, too. Why not let us know on our Facebook page or tweet us?
