Holidays Part II: What you won’t find in the small print

Following on from her last blog, Teresa Buckle, who has two children with severe allergies, explains why her dream break was so nearly the holiday from hell…

So, we were after a family holiday – somewhere hot where we could have a great adventure. And we found Gambia, which looked brilliant in the brochures. It was in our budget and had beautiful beaches. Perfect, we thought.

I am a member of a few allergy internet forums and it was only when I was reading other people’s posts that a major problem became obvious. Everyone kept mentioning the local dish. It contained NUTS. A bit of an issue when your son has a severe allergy.

I questioned this and, yes, it appears that the national crop of Gambia is indeed peanuts. They cook with nut oil, use the peanut shells on the fire as fuel and sell a type of peanut brittle in the street as a snack. Also, because they are so cheap, people generally bring back bags and bags of nuts on the plane. There are basically nuts EVERYWHERE.

We were so close to booking the trip and nowhere in the travel blurb did it mention this or give warnings for people in our situation. There was no way we would have been able to avoid peanuts if we had gone out there and we couldn’t have been certain they would understand our dietary needs, too. I think cross-contamination would have been inevitable.

It is scary to think that so many holiday destinations could be full of hazards like this. I’m just glad the people on the forum told me in no uncertain terms not to risk Gambia and to look elsewhere. They definitely don’t put this kind of information in the holiday brochures!
