Nailed gluten-free bread? You be the judge…

Whilst perusing the FreeFrom aisle at my local supermarket, I was delighted to discover Helen’s gluten-free bread mix, and what made me even more excited was the fact it was reduced to £1. How could I pass this bargain by? Not only would this give me the chance to bake my own bread, but also to get crafty in the kitchen and try creating some marbled bread using spices and natural powders.

It all started well, the pack simply asked me to add water and oil (I used coconut oil) and mix it until it became the right consistency.

I decided that I would make red chilli and paprika with green Matcha tea bread, and a blue butterfly pea with yellow turmeric bread. So, I added theses spices and powders to my mixture which I had split into 4 bowls. I blobbed the mixtures into a loaf tin in a checkerboard kind of way and then swirled the mixtures a little with a fork (I realised later that I should have swirled A LOT more). I then put the tin in hot water and left it covered for 40 minutes to prove the dough, before baking in the oven for a further 40 minutes.

As you can see, the red chilli with green Matcha tea bread looks slightly more appetising and it also tasted fantastic. However, the blue butterfly pea and yellow turmeric bread looks a bit crazy, and it just tasted of plain bread.

I’m glad I had the chance to experiment with gluten-free bread mix – it not only worked, but also tasted great. I have to say though that the blue and yellow bread is definitely for show and not for an everyday lunchbox sandwich like ham and pickle.

When I asked my nephew if he would eat these colourful culinary delights, his answer was…

Not everyone loves spices and powders unfortunately, but that meant more for me which was a result.
