Tricky eaters abroad

We have just got back from our family holiday to Spain and it was really good this year food-wise. I am very lucky as my folks live out there for a lot of the year, so it is really easy for us to go and stay. This means we know the area around Denia really well. I have now been going to visit them there for 17 years! Even my three year old has been out there four times.

I noticed a massive difference this year. You’ll read in last year’s blog (Gracias Spain for fabulous free-from food and drink) that I usually take half a suitcase of bread and snacks. This year however, my mum said not to worry about it. The new Carrefour there had massive aisles for gluten free and lactose free (me and the girls have coeliac disease and two of us have lactose intolerance too). As you can see below, good ‘ol Schar was an absolute lifesaver, as always. Love you Schar! They also saved us completely in Lanzarote which you can see in this blog (All inclusive vs self catering breaks… which is best for tricky eaters).

I was really pleased this year as there was a notable improvement in nearly every menu I saw. They now all had allergens clearly marked on them. It was sometimes tricky to find a meal that was both gluten and dairy free, but they were happy to amend meals and did not make us feel awkward which was a result.

This was the menu at Piscina de Orba. This amazing place has a little play area for the kids too which makes eating out really easy. I had mussels for the first time since I was diagnosed in 2012 and they were amazing. We went back as it was so good and I ordered them again.

I also had the biggest swordfish I have ever seen in my life. And when I asked about the chips – I had the best response from a waiter I have ever had in my life…”The chips are cooked in completely fresh oil. They are 100% gluten free. Do not worry, there is no risk.”

There were two restaurants where there was literally one thing on the whole menu that had gluten or dairy in it (bread and butter) so what a treat that was. We could literally have anything we wanted if we took our own gf bread and spread. I talked about both of these places in my previous blog (the restaurants are lovingly known as the ‘Chicken Shack’ and the ‘Cow Shed’). They are as good as ever. Of course, we had to go back to them both for a second time.

We also visited our beloved Lungo Mare in Javea and weren’t disappointed, so of course we had to go back again. Look at the gorgeous salads above. They are really clued up about allergens and look after tricky eaters well. They also sell plenty of wine and give you extra limoncello on your anniversary. What could be better!?

And last, but definitely not least, we just had to visit the Tutto Frutto ice-cream stand in Denia. And as per the recurring theme, we went back twice. To my three year old, a choice of six ice-creams when you are gluten and dairy-free is just amazing. Imagine how delicious they look through a child’s eyes…

We were so keen on the second visit that we arrived before it opened and ended up waiting around for an hour. Ha ha.

We all definitely made the most of all the food we could have. Right, are Weight Watchers doing a discount at the moment?
